Charles Gaines drew a grid of straight lines on paper in 2013. The lines cross each other at sharp angles, but the pattern isn’t random. Each square holds tiny marks—dots, dashes, short lines—that build up like a texture. Gaines repeats this system over the whole sheet. The marks create a shimmer on the page, like light over water. It looks simple until you notice how the small details add up. The lines and marks are his way of turning math into art. Try searching his name to see how he blends rules with feeling.
