How the app works

Tile board

Tap any painting. The board rearranges around it.

The Explore board shows a grid of works drawn from the neighbor graph — 40 paintings connected to each tile by movement, subject, palette, and period. Tap a tile and the surrounding works shift to reflect that painting's own neighbors. Each tap is a curatorial decision; the board is never the same twice.

Works span 200+ movements, 11 historical periods, 16 genres, and 380+ subjects. Every axis is navigable. You can follow Impressionism into Post-Impressionism into early abstraction without lifting a finger from the tile board.

For You

A daily pick drawn from what you have saved and rated.

For You composes a ranked feed each day from your taste history — artists you follow, works you have saved, movements you have spent time in. There are no engagement signals, no sponsored placements, and no inferred demographic categories. It reads your explicit choices and surfaces works that share their movement lineage, subject matter, or palette.

The daily pick also feeds the home-screen widget. Your pick for today appears on your lock screen without opening the app.

Exhibition tracking — Plus

A painting you love is coming to a museum near you.

Plus subscribers track artists and specific paintings. When the scraper finds that a followed work is included in an upcoming or traveling exhibition, the app sends a notification with the museum, date range, and a link to the institution's ticketing page. The notification arrives before the show opens, not after.

Exhibition data is gathered from thousands of museum sources on a tiered schedule: flagship institutions daily, mid-size institutions every three days, regional partners weekly. The 3D globe view shows active and upcoming exhibitions by location — filter by region, institution tier, or date range.

This is the headline reason for Plus. If a work you saved in the Tate collection joins a traveling exhibition that reaches a museum in your city, you will know before you would find out any other way.

Plus membership

What Plus adds. $5.99 per month or $39.99 per year.

Beyond real-world tracking, Plus lifts the free limits on saved works and collections (free accounts get a starter shelf), adds smart collections that gather your saved works into browsable sets, supports richer tours and saved museum days, and keeps the full daily archive open to revisit. All benefits are tied to your Apple ID and restore across devices without any additional setup.

Cancel anytime through iOS Settings. Billed through Apple In-App Purchase — we do not store payment details.

Questions

Where can I get the app?

Artifact World Gallery is live on the App Store for iPhone and iPad — use the download button above. The full catalog is also available to browse here on the web, no app required.

Does the app require a Plus subscription?

No. The tile board, Scroll feed, For You picks, saving works, and browsing the full corpus of 190,000+ paintings are all free. Plus is an optional membership for people who want real-world tracking, more saved works and collections, and smart collections.

How is the exhibition data gathered?

We monitor museum and institution sources on a regular schedule and surface current and upcoming exhibitions in the app. Listings are refreshed continuously, so the museums and works you track stay current.

Does the app work offline?

The painting catalog lives on-device, so the tile board, Scroll feed, and saved works keep working without a network connection. Real-world tracking and live museum event data require a connection.
