Untitled is a 1969 ink by Claes Oldenburg, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting shows a car drawn from the back, like you’re looking at it through a window. The car is pale blue-green, almost see-through, with smooth curves and big round wheels. The background looks like a grid of tiny squares, and the car sits right on top of it. The artist used a mix of drawing and molding to make it look almost like plastic. The car’s shape is simple but feels a little weird because it’s floating without any ground. Want to see more? Check out lithography to understand how the grid background was made.
Claes Oldenburg (January 28, 1929 – July 18, 2022) was a Swedish-born American sculptor best known for his public art installations, typically featuring large replicas of everyday objects.
