Untitled is a 1908 graphite by Elie Nadelman, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This sketch shows two faces stacked on top of each other, drawn in thick, tangled lines. The top face has a big hat with a brim, while the bottom face wears glasses. Both faces are outlined with heavy, crisscrossed pencil strokes that fill in the shapes. The artist used a lot of overlapping lines to create shadows and texture—this is called *cross-hatching*. It gives the drawing a rough, almost 3D feel. Check out how *cross-hatching* works in other drawings next.
