Untitled is a 1920 ink by Ewald Mataré, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This is a simple black-and-white face carved into wood. The head is shaped like a mask with sharp angles, and the eyes, nose, and mouth are just thin lines. The hair is shown as straight, geometric lines on top, and there’s a small curved shape in the corner that looks like a hand or an eye. The artist used a tool to cut away the wood, leaving the dark lines against the light background. This method is called *woodcut*. Next, check out woodcut to see how artists print from carved blocks like this.
Ewald Wilhelm Hubert Mataré was a German painter and sculptor, who dealt with, among other things, the figures of men and animals in a stylized form.
