Untitled is a 1961 silver by Josip Vaništa, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This row of small photos shows different faces—some looking straight ahead, others turned slightly. A few wear hats or suits, while one person holds a baby. The images are black and white, with some looking blurry or scratched, like old photos. One face is painted over in white, and another has a rough, textured surface. These images were stuck onto fabric instead of paper, which is unusual for photos. The mix of clear and messy faces makes them feel both personal and strange. Check out the technique: chiaroscuro for how light and shadow create drama in art.
Josip Vaništa (1924–2018) was a Croatian artist, born in Karlovac.
