Untitled is a 1964 paint by Marcel Broodthaers, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting shows a stack of old, yellowed newspapers held together by a nail. On top of the papers sit a bunch of black, shiny plastic eggs—some cracked open. The background is a dark, textured surface that looks like rough fabric or paper. The eggs are arranged like a pile of fruit, but they’re made of plastic and look heavy. The newspaper headlines are in French, and one says “Il faut sauver le Congo,” which roughly means “We must save the Congo.” If you like this mix of everyday objects and art, check out The Museum of Modern Art for more pieces that play with ordinary things.
Marcel Broodthaers (1924–1976) was a Belgian artist, born in Saint-Gilles.
