Untitled is a 1981 graphite by Michelle Stuart, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting looks like a dark, rough board with bits of dirt stuck on it. The top half is covered in brown and green earth, almost like a messy wall. Down at the bottom, there’s a thin strip of black-and-white photos—cracks in rocks and soil. The artist used real dirt from the Galapagos Islands mixed into the paint. That’s why it feels gritty and real, not smooth like usual art. Check out Michelle Stuart to see more of her work with earth and photos.
