Untitled is a 1998 ink by Nicole Eisenman, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting shows a weird, cartoonish kid with big ears and a sad face standing in shallow water. Behind him, three boats float on the lake, each packed with naked people lounging or kissing. The water is a muddy blue, and the shore has a rocky cliff with a leafy archway. The kid’s arms are raised like he’s shouting, but his face looks upset. The artist mixed thick ink lines with rough, uneven brushstrokes to make everything look both detailed and messy. The boats and people are drawn in a simple, almost childlike style, but the kid’s face is more exaggerated. Check out cross-hatching to see how artists use layered lines to add depth.
