Untitled is a 2003 graphite by Philip Knoll, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This drawing is split into nine small boxes, each showing a different odd scene. Two birds kiss in the center. Around them, a soldier holds a key, a cowboy aims a gun, a hand pops out of a cannon, and a baby floats in a crib under a moon. Other boxes show a man sleeping with balloons, a turtle with a star, and a hand giving a thumbs-up. The biggest surprise is the quiet contrast—violent or strange images next to gentle ones, like the kissing birds. The lines are thick and simple, with no shading. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists build shadows with lines.
