This drawing shows a face split in half by a sharp vertical line. One side is smooth, the other packed with tiny ink lines forming texture. The eyes are simple shapes, the mouth a straight line, but the hands gripping the sides look almost like claws. The artist used lots of tiny parallel lines to create shadow and shape—this is called *cross-hatching*. It makes the rough side look like bark or stone. Try looking up cross-hatching to see how other artists use it.
