Untitled is a 1939 ink by Toyen, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This drawing shows two tiny houses sitting in a field. One is a simple box with a peaked roof, and the other has a chimney and a window with a figure inside. A bare tree with twisted roots and a bird’s nest grows right in front of them, its branches sprawling across the scene. The artist used only ink to create the whole thing, with careful lines that build up shadows and texture. The houses look fragile next to the gnarled tree, like they’re part of nature now. Check out cross-hatching to see how artists use lines to make depth without color.
Toyen was a Czech painter, drafter, and illustrator and a member of the surrealist movement.
