Untitled is a 1920 ink by Arthur Bowen Davies, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This sketch shows a bare-chested man sitting on a rock, one leg bent, the other dangling. Behind him, a tree trunk juts out like a dark frame. To the right, a quick, loose drawing of a woman’s face and shoulders is almost hidden in the corner. The lines are rough and fast, like a quick study. The artist used a printing method called lithography, where the image is drawn directly on a smooth stone. This sketch feels more like a practice piece than a finished work. Next, look up lithography to see how it works.
Arthur Bowen Davies (September 26, 1862 – October 24, 1928) was an avant-garde American artist and influential advocate of modern art in the United States c. 1910–1928.
