Untitled is a 1936 gouache by Ben Nicholson, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting shows four big blocks of color stacked unevenly. There’s a gray square on top, a black one below it, a red square floating in the middle, and a blue square under the red. The sides are dark brown, and the edges are clean and sharp. The colors are flat and solid, with no shading or texture. The way the blocks don’t line up makes it feel off-balance. If you like this kind of simple, bold art, try looking up gouache.
Benjamin Lauder Nicholson, OM (10 April 1894 – 6 February 1982) was an English painter of abstract compositions (sometimes in low relief), landscapes, and still-life. He was one of the leading promoters of abstract art in England.
