Untitled is a 1930 by Cyril E. Power, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This print is packed with bold shapes and patterns. You see lots of faces, some with big eyes or zigzag hair, all overlapping in a busy mix. The colors are mostly deep blues and creamy whites, with some black lines adding sharp edges. The design feels like a swarm of figures, all tangled together. The artist used a linoleum cut, which means they carved into rubbery blocks to stamp out the image. That’s why the lines look so crisp and the colors feel flat but striking. Next, check out technique: chiaroscuro to see how light and shadow create drama.
Cyril Edward Power (17 December 1872 – 25 May 1951) was an English artist best known for his linocut prints, long-standing artistic partnership with artist Sybil Andrews and for co-founding the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in London in 1925.
