Untitled is a 1937 watercolor by Edward Burr, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting shows a chaotic scene split in two. On the left, a yellow-robed figure climbs a rickety ladder while tiny people scurry below. Above them, a giant in a brown cloak holds a rope tied to something unseen. On the right, a knight in heavy armor stands stiffly against a brick wall, his red cape glowing. The knight’s armor looks almost mechanical, while the giant’s face is hidden in shadow. The colors are bright but uneven—yellows clash with dark blues and grays. Next, check out watercolor glazing to see how layers of paint create depth like this.
