About this work

This is a black-and-white portrait carved into linoleum. The person wears a wide-brimmed hat and a high-collared shirt, their face turned slightly to the side. The lines in the background swirl in every direction, making the face stand out sharply. The texture looks rough in places, like the artist pressed hard with the tool. This kind of printmaking is called a linoleum cut. Next, check out Elizabeth Catlett to see more of her work.
