Untitled is a 2014 ink by Günther Uecker, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting is all black and white. You see lots of jagged lines and shapes. Some look like nails or splinters, but they’re not real—they’re carved into the wood. The artist used a sharp tool to cut into the wood, then inked it. That’s how the white lines stand out against the dark background. Next, check out how this woodcut technique works.
Günther Uecker (German pronunciation: ; 13 March 1930 – 10 June 2025) was a German painter, sculptor, op artist and installation artist. He became known primarily for his nail reliefs. In 1961, Uecker joined the ZERO group.
