Untitled
1954
From the collection of Museum of Modern Art
Untitled is a 1954 by Gerd Leufert, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This piece looks like a rough, patchy square of black shapes on a light background. The black areas are thick and uneven, with some jagged edges cutting into lighter brown and beige patches. The whole thing feels like it was made by scraping or stamping, not smooth brushstrokes. The edges of the paper show wear, like it’s been handled a lot. The signature in the corner is small and faint, almost hidden. If you like this style, check out The Museum of Modern Art for more works like it.
