About this work

Bright red flowers spill out of a chipped white pot on a wooden shelf. The petals are thick and glossy, some slightly wilted at the edges. Next to the pot sits a dark green glass jar with a metal lid. The background is a rough, yellowish wall with uneven brushstrokes. The paint is thick in places, making the colors almost pop off the canvas. The way the artist built up the paint—especially on the flowers—gives them a textured, almost three-dimensional look. This technique is called impasto.
