Untitled is a 1980 graphite by Jay DeFeo, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This drawing shows a crumpled piece of paper or thin cloth, folded into sharp angles and creases. The lines are all in pencil, with some areas darker where the strokes overlap. The edges are uneven, and the whole thing looks like it’s been scrunched up and left that way. The artist used simple pencil marks to show how the paper bends and folds. The way the light and shadow play across the creases makes it look almost three-dimensional. If you like this kind of sketchy, shadowy drawing, look up cross-hatching.
Jay DeFeo (31 March 1929 – 11 November 1989) was an American visual artist who became celebrated in the 1950s as part of the spirited community of Beat artists, musicians, and poets in San Francisco.
