Untitled is a 2008 ink by Julie Mehretu, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This sketch looks like a tangled mess of lines—lots of sharp, crisscrossing strokes in black and gray. Some areas are thick with overlapping marks, while others fade into light, almost invisible scribbles. The whole thing feels chaotic, like ink splattered and then scratched into the paper. The artist used a technique called *drypoint*, where they etched lines into a metal plate and pressed ink into them. The result is that fuzzy, sketchy edge to the marks. Next, check out lithography to see how it’s different from drypoint.
Julie Mehretu is an Ethiopian American contemporary visual artist, known for her multi-layered paintings of abstracted landscapes on a large scale.
