Untitled is a 1977 gouache by Karl Schrag, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting is mostly black with wild, swirling white lines everywhere. In the middle, there’s a dark shape that looks like a person standing, with a few bright spots of red and blue. The lines seem to move around them, almost like wind or noise. The artist used a printmaking method called *monotype*—ink is pressed onto a plate, then scraped or wiped to create texture. The red and blue patches feel like sudden bursts of color in a storm. Next, check out gouache to see how this thick, opaque paint works.
Karl Schrag (December 7, 1912 – December 10, 1995) was an American printmaker and educator. He has been characterized by the National Gallery of Art as "among the most important printmakers in America during the 1950s".
