About this work

This black-and-white print shows a strange, simple scene. A giant boot sits on a low block, its laces dangling. Behind it, a machine with wheels and gears looks like it’s part of the boot—or maybe the boot is part of the machine. The whole thing is drawn in clean, sharp lines. The boot’s size makes it feel like it could step out of a fairy tale or a dream. The artist used a technique that lets them scratch lines into a metal plate, then press ink into those grooves to make the print. Next, check out etching to see how artists create these crisp, mysterious images.
