This work is made of dark, carved squares stuck together in a rough grid. Each piece looks like it was pressed or cut into metal, leaving raised lines that make simple shapes—curves, boxes, and doors. The whole thing sits on a light background, so the dark pieces stand out sharply. The artist used lead, a heavy metal, to create these shapes. The way the pieces overlap makes it feel like a puzzle. Check out Louise Nevelson for more of her box-like sculptures.
