Untitled is a 1998 ink by Markus Lüpertz, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting looks messy on purpose. Jagged black lines and smudges dominate the left side, while the right side shows a tangled mess of trees and a dark shape that might be a ship or a forest. Bright orange and blue splashes break up the chaos, and the whole thing feels rough and unfinished. The artist used two printing methods—etching and lithography—to layer the marks. The mix of sharp lines and blurry smudges makes it feel like the image was made quickly, almost by accident. Check out lithography to see how this technique works.
