This painting is made of just three colors: a deep red, a bright yellow, and a solid blue. The red frames a square of yellow in the top left corner, while the blue sits alone in the top right. The rest of the canvas is filled with that same yellow, smooth and flat. The painting feels simple but precise—the edges are clean, and the colors don’t mix. The artist used flat, solid blocks of color instead of shading or blending. Look up Mary Heilmann to see how she played with color in other works.
