This painting is a collage of odd shapes and colors. In the center is a white, crumpled-looking dress form with a purple bow at the neck. Around it float tiny insects, leaves, and a hand with bark-like skin. Some pieces look like they’re floating, others pinned down. The artist used real materials—cellophane, paper, even painted bits—to make it feel like a puzzle. The mix of soft fabrics and rough textures is unusual for the time. Next, check out Max Ernst to see how he played with dreams and strange images.
