Untitled is a 1921 graphite by Morris Kantor, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This sketch shows a lone figure standing in a tangle of sharp, zigzag lines. The body is drawn in loose strokes, but the background explodes with jagged shapes—like broken glass or jagged metal. The whole scene feels unstable, as if the figure is caught in a storm of angles. The artist packed so much energy into the lines that the paper almost looks torn. The pencil work is thick in some spots, almost like scribbles, but still holds the shape of a person. Try looking up cross-hatching to see how artists build texture with lines.
Morris Kantor (Belarusian: Морыс Кантор) (1896–1974) was a Belarusian-born American painter based in the New York City area.
