This sketch shows a man’s face and shoulders in loose, dark ink lines. His collar is turned up, and his hands rest on his chest. The paper is light, almost white, and the drawing looks quick, like it was done in one go. The lines are thick in some spots and fade out in others, giving a sense of movement. The artist used ink to build up shadows and texture, especially on the coat. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists use layers of lines to create depth.
