This sketch shows a person playing a flute while holding a small bird in one hand. The lines are scratchy and uneven, like quick pencil strokes. The person’s clothes look loose and old-fashioned, and the bird seems curious. The artist used tiny parallel lines to build up dark areas—this is called cross-hatching. It makes the drawing look both rough and detailed at the same time. Try looking up cross-hatching to see how other artists use it.
