About this work

You see a bare maple leaf printed in soft gray ink on a big sheet of white paper. The leaf’s veins are drawn with thin, wobbly lines that look like pencil. Plimack Mangold made this print by scratching the leaf shape into a metal plate, then letting ink settle in the tiny grooves. The quiet, almost empty space makes the leaf feel both real and ghostly at once. If you like how she turns simple things into something thoughtful, look up the technique called *aquatint* next.
