Untitled is a 1977 pastel by Edda Renouf, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting is all black with a tangle of white lines crisscrossing the top half. The lines look like they were drawn quickly, uneven and jagged. The bottom half is a clean, flat white strip. The white lines sit on top of a paper that’s been cut or scored with shallow lines—you can just make them out if you look close. The pastel marks are rough, almost like scribbles, but they cover the whole surface. Next, check out pastel to see how this soft, waxy medium works.
