Untitled is a 1914 ink by Erich Heckel, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This sketch shows a busy city street with sharp, angular buildings. A tall church spire stands in the center, surrounded by shorter towers and domes. People walk along a bridge and sidewalk—some standing, one sitting on the curb with a bag. The lines are bold and simple, with no soft shading. The artist used a scratchy method to create the lines, almost like carving into the surface. It looks rough in places, adding texture to the scene. Look up etching to see how this technique works.
Erich Heckel (31 July 1883 – 27 January 1970) was a German painter and printmaker, and a founding member of the group Die Brücke ("The Bridge") which existed 1905–1913.
