You see a black-and-white print of a hand and a foot pressed against a textured surface, like they’re being X-rayed or stenciled. Herold made this by pressing real body parts onto a metal plate, then printing it—so the image is literally a trace of skin. The grainy texture gives it a raw, almost medical feel, as if the body is both present and fading. If you like how this blurs photography and touch, check out other works in The Museum of Modern Art that play with printing techniques.
