Untitled is a 1981 ink by H. C. Westermann, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This sketch shows a messy yard with a small house, a fence, and a few scraggly trees. Two men in cowboy hats stand near the house—one looks tired, the other holds a dog. A woman in a long coat walks with a cat. There’s a dog lying down, a helicopter in the sky, and random junk scattered everywhere, like a broken chair and a barrel. The drawing is full of quick, sketchy lines that make it feel loose and fast. The title is written at the top: *"The Pioneers—312"*, which might hint at something bigger. Check out cross-hatching to see how artists build shading with lines.
Horace Clifford Westermann was an American sculptor and printmaker. His sculptures frequently incorporate traditional carpentry, marquetry techniques, mixed media, and a range of personal, literary, artistic, and pop-cultural references.
