About this work

This painting shows a cow and a goat drinking from a shallow stream. The cow is large and brown, bending down to the water. The goat stands nearby, smaller and darker. Behind them, a rocky hill rises, with a few trees and a tower-like structure in the distance. The sky is soft and dim, blending into the muted colors of the landscape. The artist used dark shadows and light spots to give the animals form, especially on the cow’s back and the goat’s legs. This makes them look solid but also a little mysterious. If you like this style, look up chiaroscuro.

Dirck van der Bergen

Dirck van der Bergen painted quiet Dutch landscapes alive with animals—think cows by a stream, a sheepfold near a hut, or a lush pasture with goats.
