Untitled is a 1980 ink by Jennifer Bartlett, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This painting is six panels side by side, each showing a different scene of fish swimming in water. The colors shift from soft greens and blues to darker blues and blacks. Some fish are round and pale, others are long and dotted with tiny marks. The brushstrokes and textures look rough, almost like they were carved or stamped. The fish all face the same way, but their sizes and patterns change from panel to panel. This makes the whole thing feel like a quiet study of movement without actually showing movement. If you like this, look up woodcut next.
