Untitled is a 1937 oil by José Bernardo Cardoso Jr., depicting Rio De Janeiro, held at Museum of Modern Art.
You see a tabletop still life next to an open window; beyond the window, Rio’s Guanabara Bay shimmers under a pale sky. Cardoso Jr. painted this in 1937, when most Brazilian artists were chasing modern styles. Instead, he stayed with quiet pencil lines and thin oil washes, letting the light do the work. The drawing feels almost like a sketch, yet the colors glow as if the sun is still moving across the paper. To see how light can be both simple and alive, look up the technique called glazing.
José Bernardo Cardoso Jr (1861–1947) was a Brazilian artist.
