Untitled is a 1957 ink by Lester F. Johnson, depicting Rain, held at Museum of Modern Art.
You see a black-and-white woodcut of a man’s face, rough lines carved into the block like quick pencil strokes. Johnson kept printing this same image for nearly thirty years, pulling new copies long after most artists would call a work “done.” The repeated act turns the print into something like a diary entry that never ends. To see how other artists used the same technique, look up woodcut.
Lester Johnson (January 27, 1919 – May 30, 2010) was an American artist and educator.
