Untitled is a 1916 ink by Lovis Corinth, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This sketch is all jagged lines and rough shapes. A horse rears up in the center, its body twisted like a knot. Around it, people tumble—some on the ground, some half-standing, all tangled together. The marks are dark and smudgy, like someone scribbled fast without looking up. The artist used a technique where ink is rubbed onto a smooth stone, then pressed onto paper. That’s why the lines feel both sharp and blurry at once. Next, check out lithography to see how this sketch was made.
Lovis Corinth was a German artist and writer whose mature work as a painter and printmaker realized a synthesis of impressionism and expressionism.
