Untitled is a 1939 graphite by Martín Ramírez, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This drawing shows a man riding a horse under an archway. The man wears a hat, a striped shirt, and a checkered vest. His horse has a saddle and a horn on its head. The floor is made of brick-like shapes, and the arch has a fancy border with repeating patterns. The drawing uses lots of lines to fill in shadows and textures, like on the horse’s body and the floor. It looks like the artist used crayons and pencils to make it. Check out cross-hatching to see how artists build up details with lines.
Martín Ramírez (January 30, 1895 – February 17, 1963) was a self-taught artist who spent most of his adult life institutionalized in California mental hospitals, diagnosed as a catatonic schizophrenic.
