You see a tangle of ink lines that look like a face, a hat, and a hand—all at once, none clearly. Steinberg drew this to poke fun at Henri Matisse’s loose, colorful style. He used only black ink and sharp angles, making the joke even sharper. The title says it all: *In the Manner of Matisse*—but it’s not really Matisse at all.
