His documented occupations also include roles as a photographer, writer, playwright, illustrator, and painter. Early in his development, he studied under the artist Louis-Édouard Rioult. Throughout his life, Gautier contributed to French culture through these diverse creative and critical pursuits, maintaining a presence in the literary and visual arts of his time.
