Otto Friedrich was the kind of artist who treated paint like a metronome, painting fast, precise strokes in time with the music he loved. In 1913 he made Scherzo (from Rhythmen), a tempera work that looks like sheet music translated into color and light, jagged yellows and blues bouncing off the page like a dancer’s footwork. The piece belongs in Gallery Tiles because it’s one of the few surviving works from a small 1910s group called the Rhythmicists, who tried to paint music long before Kandinsky’s abstractions.
