Karl Madsen was a Danish painter, art historian, and museum director who lived from 1855 to 1938 within the Kingdom of Denmark. His professional life encompassed work as a biographer, graphic artist, and draftsperson alongside his painting. He served as a teacher to the artist Anna Ancher and was the parent of the artist Viggo Madsen. Madsen was also the child of the artist Andreas Peter Madsen. His career reflected a deep engagement with the visual arts through both creation and historical documentation, leaving a legacy that connected generations of Danish artists through his instruction and familial ties.
