Nicholas Vanderlyn was an American painter who lived from 1723 to 1812. His documented work focused on sign painting. He was the child of the artist Pieter Vanderlyn and later became the parent of the artist John Vanderlyn. This lineage connects three generations of painters within the united states. His career as a sign painter provided the foundation for his family's artistic legacy.
