Ida Silfverberg spent her life quietly copying other artists, Dutch genre scenes, Italian card-players, like a painterly magpie. In the 1860s she cranked out these exact replicas, one after another, as if training her eye to see light and fabric folds. One day she looked up and drew her own twist on a Bohemian fiddler and a girl resting her chin on her hand.
