Wilhelm von Diez was a painter and illustrator from the Kingdom of Bavaria who lived from 1839 to 1907. His artistic formation included study under the artist Karl von Piloty. Later in his career, he served as a university teacher, influencing a generation of notable painters. Among his students were Karl Stauffer-Bern, Jean Alexandru Steriadi, Max Slevogt, Eilif Peterssen, and Julius Adam. His work as an educator and creator established a significant presence within the German art world of the late nineteenth century.
