Chris Orr kept a box of old postcards by his desk and studied them like secret codes. Between commissions he’d sketch over Renaissance prints, tracing Raphael’s figures just to see what happened when he moved them around. In 2002 he took Raphael’s “Miraculous Draught of Fishes,” erased the miracle, and drew the fishermen hauling empty nets, nets that look ready to float up the wall.
